The research papers of British Codebreaker Alan Turing are up for auction, and there was a real fear that the paper would leave the British Isles as a result. However, it seems that Google has come to the rescue by putting up £62,784 towards the auction purchase.
It is thought that the papers will sell at auction for around £500,000 later today at Christies in London.
“If we do not raise enough, which is looking increasingly unlikely, I hope whoever buys it donates the papers to Bletchley Park so we can all benefit from them.” Gareth Halfacree
Alan Turing is considered to be the father of the computer. He produced 18 papers on computing during his career, before committing suicide in 1954.
Gareth Halfacree Campaign to Save The Papers
Upon learning that the papers are to be sold, Gareth Halfacree, an IT journalist, has been trying to raise funds to help secure them. He plans to donate the papers to Bletchley Park in Milton Keynes.
Microsoft and Apple
Gareth is hoping for a last minute donation from the other big IT companies, Microsoft and Apple, so ensure that the papers remain in the UK.
