World’s First Cloud Computing Degrees

Cloud computing is a growing trend in information technology (IT) and computing. Forward thinking companies understand the benefits of cloud computing, with the promise of greater mobility and cost savings. Rather than spending money on computer infrastructure, companies only need to rent space on another information system at another company.

Business Advantages of Cloud Computing

The cloud allows companies to spend less money on computing power as well. Their systems only need access to the internet, making less powerful and less expensive computers adequate for their needs. The cloud offers 24-hour instantaneous access to the programs, databases and word processing documents the company uses every day. Computing costs become predictable and easier to budget.

World’s First Cloud Master’s Degree

Acknowledging that the future of computing is in cloud technology, the Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) in Cork, Ireland offers the world’s first cloud master’s degree. Beginning this September, the yearlong program will accept 20 students to start.

Along with the master’s program, CIT is also starting a program for a bachelor’s degree in cloud technology as well. Continuing Ireland’s lead as a top cloud technology center, the program is an honor’s based degree.

Cloud Education Origins

The cloud degree grew from CIT’s close relationship with the American company, EMC. Just a few years ago, EMC was positioned to be a leader in information technology storage. The technology evolved quickly, bringing EMC to change its strategy to storing information in the cloud. To do this, the company needed employees skilled in the field. CIT custom designed a cloud computing program for EMC, which grew into the new cloud computing Master’s degree. EMC will participate in the degree program by offering students hands on experience.

The Master’s program appeals primarily to IT professionals already working in the industry. Companies like VMware, EMC and Cisco all seek help in training employees to work with cloud computing. The Bachelor’s program will be a useful add-on for computer science majors.

Both of these programs were a year in development and involved consortiums with leading industry companies including Cisco, VMware, RSA, SpringSource, and Greenplum. Employees from VMware and EMC took part in module pilot programs to formulate the materials of the degrees. Students completing these programs will be ready to assume top places in the formation of this new technology. Master’s candidates will be prepared to enter management positions in the cloud technology field.

The Future of Cloud Education

The world’s information is moving from private locations to the cloud. It is natural that the world’s first cloud computing degree would originate in Ireland, the geographic center of cloud computing. Cloud technology will continue to advance as will cloud computing course offerings and technology schools.
