Microsoft is giving a $50 discount for the Xbox 360 gaming console, lowering the price in direct competition with what is thought to be the first price cut by Nintendo Co. for its Wii system.

The discount will by way of a mail-in rebate, which is valid for all purchases until 5th October. This drops the price of the highest spec Xbox to just $249.99.

Microsoft originally lowered the price of the Elite model to $299.99 at the end of August, after Sony reduced the price tag on the PlayStation 3.

U.S. sales of Sony and Microsoft systems rose in August after the price reductions. Nintendo, which has never cut the $249.99 price of the Wii, saw U.S. sales fall 39% in August last month. The Kyoto-based company may cut the Wii’s price by $50 as soon as this week, during the Tokyo Game Show. Nintendo’s cut will go into effect Sept. 27, he said.

It looks like a price war is starting in the games consoles, which could be good news for consumers buying Christmas gifts at the end of the year.
