SEOBook have created a rather stylish Infographic (not sure why I felt that infographic deserved a capital i there) on some major Google search engine updates over the last few years. All about brands.
Interesting to see that they differentiate “brands” from “bog standard” (my words) sites. But, how does one build a brand? What is a brand? What are the signals to send to the computer to say “hi Google, I am a brand“?
I guess that social media plays a big role, partly because Google (Matt Cutts) keeps talking about it, and partly because it is the easiest way for a business to create a social awareness about its ….. brand. Maybe Google looks at proper logos and registered trademarks too, maybe linking by business name is a feature too (gotta have links built into the brandsearchengine surely?).
