Crowd Sourcing Meets Star Wars

Star Wars Crowd Sourced
Today a friend shared on Google+ one of the greatest things I have ever seen online. And I have so far only managed to watch about 2 minutes of it! (son trying to sleep).

A crowd-source project was set up to create a new version of Star Wars: A New Hope. The film is available on Vimeo.com (like YouTube, but not) and was put together as part of Starwarsuncut.com. The idea, and the outcome, was that people would make short scenes from the film of no more than 15 seconds and send them in. The scenes are then mashed together into a film.

The outcome is excellent. Well, excellent if you know and love Star Wars. It probably looks bloody stupid otherwise.

In fact, looking more at the website, the procedure was as follows:

  1. We cut up the movie into 15 second clips
  2. You claim one and refilm it however you like
  3. We put it back together and watch the magic

The 2 minutes I have watched so far sees animation, people running around in offices, lego and other toys and a lot of really cheap costumes. It looks great fun! I cannot wait to watch it all. You do not have to wait, you can watch it now, here!

Film editors such as Guy Ducker must be quaking in their boots right now! OK, maybe their services to the movie world have not quite been completely replaced, yet.
